Movember was apparently started by some chaps in Melbourne, Australia. I got caught in the midst of the movement during my time at R/GA.
In this period of my life, I learned two things. One, Australians are awesome. And two, no matter how much my friend Josh Hoffman wants to bully me, I still can’t grow a mustache. Believe me, it’s come in a lot more in the past 5 years. Based on the rate my facial hair grows in, I’m thinking I might be able to get some beard action by the time I’m 45 when I hit my peak sexiness as a man and blossom into a cactus.
With my deficiency in the facial hair growing department, I created PAPER WHISKERS as an attempt to still participate in raising awareness for Movember and support the fight against cancer. The result was 30 illustrations of notable mustaches, real and fictional. I garnered a decent amount of attention among friends and Instagram followers, which has encouraged me to begin conceiving how to blow this out for next year. I’m hoping that I may be able to create prints and donate the proceeds to charity.
